(Anita) Anita Farmer Varel Bailey, known for his storytelling and writing, has released a new book that shares a collection of his memorable stories. His family decided to preserve his legacy by compiling some of his best stories for the public.
Bailey will be holding two book signings and author events: one today at 2 p.m. at Heritage House, and another at 2 p.m. on April 3 at the Anita Library. The book will be available for purchase at the Heritage House Library, Anita Public Library, and the Atlantic Public Library Genealogy Room. Copies are also available for $20.
This book features 28 of the 103 stories Bailey has written, with more planned for future releases.
A native of Anita, Varel Bailey was born in 1940, graduated from Anita High School, and earned an agriculture degree from Iowa State University. After his time in the ROTC, Varel, his wife Jackie, and their daughter Sue were stationed in Germany for two years. During their time there, their son Scot joined the family.
In 1965, the Baileys returned to Anita to take up life on the family farm. Over the years, Varel has played an active role in several state and national agricultural organizations and committees, which took him on agricultural delegations across the globe.
