(Audubon, IA) — For many it was the first outdoor meet of the season — for Atlantic it was not but it was a big night for the Trojans 4×100 relay. The girls have qualified for the Drake Relays by achieving the blue oval standard, running a time of 50.27 seconds. The blue oval standard time is 50.50 so Atlantic not only broke it but shattered it. The team of Stellah Van Aernam, Jayci Reed, Allison Middents and Lila Wiederstein are in their third year of running in this relay. They have already broke last year’s time at the state meet of 50.35 which got them a 20th place finish. Currently their time of 50.27 is the third fastest in Class 3A this season — Western Dubuque is first at 49.91 followed by Bishop Heelan at 50.10.
Also for Atlantic, Reed finished 2nd in the 100 Hurdles; Katilyn Hickman was 3rd in the 800; Adler Bruce finished 4th in the 400 Hurdles; Reese Harlan was 5th in the 400 and Taylee Hagen was 5th in the Long Jump. The 4×200 finished in 2nd place with Van Aernam, Middents, Braeleigh Hass and Wiederstein.
Bell Lamp for AHSTW made her return to the outdoor track by dominating the 400 Hurdles and anchoring the 4×800 relay to a win. Lamp got injured last year just before the conference meet in early May.
Lilly Miller of Treynor dominated the long distance runs by winning the one mile and two mile. Her sister Anne Miller was 2nd in the two mile and 3rd in the one mile.
CAM did not have their full team at Audubon — the school trip to Washington D.C. was this week. Ruthie Rich did finish in 3rd in the high jump and 3rd in the 100 meter dash.
The closest race was the 800 when Reese Dittmer of Tri Center caught Madeline Knispel of Treynor at the line and won by .13 seconds.
Bella Buckholdt of Underwood had a great night winning the long jump and the 100 meters — she also anchored the 4×100 relay to a 2nd place finish behind Atlantic.
The 4×800 was a great battle between Treynor and AHSTW. The Cardinals took the lead in the first two legs but Makenna Paulsen for the Lady Vikes took the lead after her first lap; Cora White of Treynor regained the lead on turn 4 of lap 2. Paulsen gave it to Bella Lamp and she caught Treynor’s Kadence Kotrous at the end of her first lap and pulled away for the win. Atlantic finished third as Williams ran the anchor leg and was gaining on Treynor on the front straightaway of the last lap.
The Distance Medley relay was one of the races of the night — the Cardinals trailed Ridge View most of the race but Joslyn Chambers caught the Raptors anchor Addison Tesch on the back straightaway of the last lap. Tesch came back and they were side by side on the front straight and Tesch was able to pull away in the final 30 meters to get the win for Ridge View, winning by a second.
The discus came down to a tie between Maddy Mason of Coon Rapids Bayard and Delany Matthews of Treynor — both threw 114 feet, 10 inches. Mason won on a judges decision based on number of throws and misses. Matthews won the shot put and Mason was 2nd.
There were no team standings in the meet.
