(Greenfield, IA) — Nodaway Valley Track Coach Brett Welsch is feeling pretty good about the track and field season this spring. Welsch says while the girls lose sprinter Maddie Weston, the numbers are solid and there is some experience returning especially with the Orient-Macksburg girls now on the team. For the boys, Welsch says he has the biggest numbers in 10 years, jumping up to 24 kids.
Sophomore Gabe Winkelmann is a returning state qualifier in the two mile (3200) and Welsch says his goal is to reduce his time in the one mile
The Wolverines qualified for state last fall in cross country so that depth will help on the track as well says Welsch
Welsch says they want to target a 4×800 and Distance Medley relay; he says they are young in the sprints so that has to sort itself out. He does say he will field a shuttle hurdle team this year.
Nodaway Valley does lose Trent Warner who was a state champ last year in the shot put; Welsch says they have young throwers this year; Cassius Burnside and Titan Foster will be in the long jump.
On the girls side, Emma Boswell was a state qualifier in both the long jump and high jump last year at O-M; she is now with Nodaway Valley. Its a different combination competing in both jumps but Welsch says she makes it work
Izzy Eisbach is a returning state qualifier in the 1600 and needs to get over a foot injury that is lingering after basketball season. Welsch says there are others who will help lead the team this year
Nodaway Valley Boys and Girls Track and Field will both open their outdoor season Tuesday at Bedford
