(Pottawattamie Co.) The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors approved a proclamation Tuesday morning recognizing March 29, 2026, as Vietnam War Veterans Day in Pottawattamie County.
The proclamation honors the millions of Americans who served during the Vietnam War between 1955 and 1975, including many from Iowa and Pottawattamie County who answered the call to duty with courage and honor. More than three million Americans served in the conflict, and more than 58,000 members of the U.S. Armed Forces lost their lives. County officials also acknowledged that many Vietnam War veterans returned home without the recognition and gratitude they deserved for their service and sacrifice.
Supervisor Jeff Jorgensen is a Vietnam era veteran….
Vietnam War Veterans Day is observed annually on March 29 and was formally established through the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017. The date marks the anniversary of March 29, 1973, when the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam.
As part of the proclamation, the Board highlighted that Pottawattamie County will host The Wall That Heals in 2026. The three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will provide an opportunity for residents to honor those who served, remember those who were lost, and reflect on the sacrifices made during the war.
The Board encourages residents to take time on March 29 to recognize and thank Vietnam War veterans for their service and sacrifice.
