(Atlantic) Atlantic Head Girls Track Coach Matt Mullenix says the team looks to be further along than it was at this point last season. Coach Mullenix and his staff welcomed 28 student-athletes to the team this season.
The Trojans have a strong core of returning state qualifiers, led by a group of seniors, in what coach Mullenix describes as staples of the program since their first year.
Coach Mullenix mentions several other seniors who will be counted on to lead. For instance, Katrina Williams, who had a great cross-country season and offseason, along with several other seniors.
The squad competed at the IATC Invitational only Class 3A Indoor Championships in Ames last week. The Trojans came away with a sixth-place finish in the 4×100-meter relay and a seventh-place finish in the 60-meter shuttle hurdle relay.
The 4×100 relay included three of the four runners from last season’s state-qualifying group that set a school record. Newcomer freshman Braeleigh Hass ran the second leg and joined veterans Stella Van Aernam, Allison Middents, and Lila Wiederstein on the anchor.
The seventh-place Shuttle Hurdle team of Emerie Jones, Aiza Jones, Adler Bruce, and Jayci Reed had a solid showing with a time of 41.98.
Coach Matthew Best and Ashley Mosier assist Coach Mullenix.
Next up for Atlantic is an indoor meet on Saturday, March 21, at Northwest Missouri State University.
