(Des Moine) A winter storm will impact parts of the Upper Midwest today through Monday morning. Snow will become widespread across Iowa, with higher totals of 6 inches or more possible in northern and eastern areas. Strong winds gusting between 55 and 65+ mph will cause significant blowing and drifting snow, leading to reduced visibility. Travel may become extremely dangerous, and at times impossible, across parts of northern and eastern Iowa.
Precipitation will start as rain this morning, then change to a wintry mix that could produce light ice accumulations before transitioning completely to snow.
A Blizzard Warning is in effect from 1:00 p.m. this afternoon until 7:00 a.m. Monday for much of Iowa. Blizzard conditions are expected, with total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches and wind gusts as high as 55 to 65 mph across portions of central and southern Iowa.
Travel could be very difficult due to slippery roads and widespread blowing snow that may significantly reduce visibility. In some areas, visibility may fall below one-quarter mile because of falling and drifting snow. These hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute. Very strong winds may also cause tree damage and lead to power outages.
Travel should be limited to emergencies only. If you must travel, carry a winter survival kit with you. If you become stranded, remain with your vehicle.
