(Atlantic, IA) — State Senator Tom Shipley and State Representative Tom Moore held a legislative update at the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce building on Saturday. Just over 20 people showed up as both legislators talked about the issues before the House and Senate. There were multiple subjects covered such as community colleges, population in Iowa, classroom behavior and property taxes.
Senator Shipley who is a Republican representing District 9 says this week the legislature will be talking about a bill allowing five community colleges in the state to offer a four year degree. Since there are two of those colleges in his district, Shipley has taken a personal interest in it
State Representative Tom Moore — a Republican representing District 18 — says it is a pilot program to start with
Moore also says that one of the most important bills passed this year was on classroom behavior
One issue brought up was whether more regulation from the legislature is impacting the population growth in the state. Shipley seems to think its the other way around
Property taxes was talked about periodically throughout the meeting. There are currently three proposals on the table — one in the Senate, one in the House and one from Governor Reynolds. Moore expressed his frustration with the process and he might not vote for any of them
Shipley mentioned that this would be his last legislative forum since he announced his retirement.
