(Des Moines) A potentially significant winter storm is expected to impact parts of the Upper Midwest this weekend, mainly from late Saturday night through Sunday night.
Blowing snow could continue to cause problems into Monday morning. Heavy snowfall combined with strong winds may create blizzard conditions and major travel impacts, especially on Sunday.
A short period of freezing rain is possible Sunday morning across central to north-central Iowa with the first signs of a developing winter storm. Precipitation begins as a mix, leaving a light glaze of ice on roads and surfaces before changing over to snow. As the day continues, snow begins to accumulate, with totals expected to reach between 3 and 6 inches by the time the storm winds down.
There is still some uncertainty about how far south the heaviest snowfall will extend into Iowa, but the highest totals are most likely in northern Iowa. However, even areas farther south into south-central Iowa could experience blizzard conditions despite lower snowfall amounts.
