(Atlantic, IA) — At a legislative forum, State Senator Tom Shipley mentioned that a bill has passed the legislature requiring schools to accept cash for entry at athletic events. Ever since COVID, schools have been switching to buying tickets exclusively online. Shipley has sponsored the bill to revert to the old system to make sure nobody will be turned away from attending a sporting event
Supporters believe it stops families from having to pay extra processing fees and ensures equal access to school activities, while opponents of the bill have argued that cashless is more efficient. Shipley says its simply designed to make sure everybody gets to go see their kids and grandkids play sports
It applies to schools affiliated with the Iowa High School Athletic Association or Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, reversing policies that made many events card-only. The bill has passed the House and Senate and is on the way to the Governor’s desk.
