(Sergeant Bluff) Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors surged out of the gate Monday night, rolling past Atlantic Trojans 91-42 in a Class 3A Substate quarterfinal at Sergeant Bluff.
The Warriors stormed out to a 26-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Brady Vankelsbeek sparked the early surge with eight points, including two 3-pointers. Dylan Janzen and Jacobi Cofield also connected from beyond the arc as Sergeant Bluff-Luton set the tone from the outset.
Atlantic found more offensive balance in the second quarter, with Hunter Nelson, Kale Jensen, James Brauer, and Gavin McLaren combining for the Trojans’ 13 points in the period. The Warriors answered with 15 points of their own, led by Kylen Vander Schaaf’s seven points, including a 3-pointer.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton broke the game open in the third quarter, pouring in 28 points while holding Atlantic to 10. Kylen Vander Schaaf caught fire from long range, knocking down three 3-pointers and scoring 13 points in the quarter. The Warriors’ defense limited the Trojans to just two field goals, with Atlantic adding six points at the free-throw line.
The running clock took effect for the remainder of the game. The Warriors outscored Atlantic 20-12 down the stretch to seal the 91-42 win.
Four Sergeant Bluff-Luton players reached double figures. Vander Schaaf led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Brody Vandalsbeeck with 17, Cofield with 14, and Ajay Vander Schaaf with 10.
Kale Jensen, Gavin McLaren, and James Brauer paced Atlantic with eight points apiece. Benny McLaren added seven, Sawyer Tarrell had four, Hunter Nelson finished with three, Hudson McLaren scored two, and Shelton Mualia and Corbin Ritter each chipped in one.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton improves to 17-6 and will face Heelan on Thursday night. Atlantic closes its season at 6-16.
