(Atlantic) The Atlantic boys’ basketball team begins postseason action tonight on the road at Sergeant Bluff-Luton. The Trojans enter as the No. 7 seed, while Sergeant Bluff-Luton is the No. 2 seed in the Class 3A Substate 8 quarterfinal.
The Warriors are led offensively by Kylen Vander Schaaf, who averages 18 points per game, and Ajay Vander Schaaf, who adds nearly 12 points per contest.
Atlantic head coach Dalton Franken says Ajay Vander Schaaf is constantly on the move and presents a challenge for opposing defenses.
Franken also points to the Warriors’ size inside, highlighted by 6-foot-6 junior Gavin Arendt and 6-foot-5 senior forward Dylan Janzen, giving Sergeant Bluff-Luton a strong presence in the paint.
Despite that, Coach Franken likes how his team matches up. Gavin McLaren leads Atlantic with 14.42 points per game, while Kale Jensen averages 12.6. Franken says the Trojans are adding a few new wrinkles in preparation for the matchup.
He emphasizes that it starts on the defensive end, then knocking down perimeter shots, and finally competing inside with McLaren and Jensen.
The winner of tonight’s game will advance to face the winner of Bishop Heelan and Harlan.
