(Red Oak) Connie Mellott, the County Clerk of Lincoln Township in Wales, appeared in front of the Montgomery County Supervisors this morning to discuss the proposed Senate study bill 3009 to eliminate townships as a form of local government and transfer the duties to the county.
Mellott then discussed the cemetery component of the proposed bill. She says that if the bill passes, the county would assume additional responsibilities and time-consuming tasks.
Mellott stated that if the trustees are eliminated, who will pick up the branches after a windstorm, trap the groundhogs, and push the snow for winter burials? Additionally, treat and scrub the stones to prevent algae growth.
Mellott says the trustees need local control of those cemeteries to maintain them and raise the necessary funds. She asked the board of supervisors for their support to tank this bill and make it go away.
Montgomery County Supervisor Bryant Amos stated he does not want to see the trustees go away; however, he questioned what needs to be done to get people to volunteer to serve on these boards. He noted that this is a local issue that everyone needs to address.
