(Iowa City, IA) — Iowa overcame some shooting woes in the 2nd half to upset #9 Nebraska 57-52 in a Big Ten men’s basketball game on Tuesday night.
The Hawkeyes did not score a field goal in the final 5 minutes of the game and were only 7 of 28 from the field in the final half and 3 of 13 from three point land. The Huskers, however, had their own shooting problems — missing 8 of their last 11 shots and going an 11 minute stretch with just one field goal. For the game, Iowa shot 33 percent and 6 of 23 from three point land while the Cornhuskers shot 41 percent for the game but only 5 of 24 on their three pointers.
Iowa led at the half 33-28 thanks to a 14-2 run late — the Hawks actually led by 10 but Nebraska scored the last 5 points of the first half including Cale Jacobsen hitting a triple at the buzzer.
Bennet Stirtz led Iowa (19-7, 9-6) with 25 points on 8-22 shooting and 7-7 from the free throw line. Cooper Koch added 10 points while Tavion Banks had 6 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawkeyes were coming off back to back losses against Maryland and Purdue on the heels of a six game winning streak.
Pryce Sandfort — an Iowa transfer — led Nebraska with 13 points and was booed and taunted by the Hawkeye fans while Jamarques Lawrence added 11 points. It was the first loss of the season for Nebraska against an unranked opponent.
