(Creston) At 3:48 p.m. Monday, the Creston Fire Department responded to a reported grass fire near the intersection of 242nd Street and Almond Street in Kent. While crews were en route, a 911 caller advised that a nearby structure was also involved, prompting dispatchers to send additional resources.
Before firefighters arrived, a propane delivery driver noticed the flames, alerted the homeowner, and helped knock down part of the fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters found that much of the blaze affecting a shed had already been extinguished. Crews determined the primary concern was a grass fire spreading through the yard. The Lenox, Iowa, Fire Department responded to assist.
Firefighters worked to fully extinguish burning grass, wood, and debris in the backyard and checked nearby structures to ensure there was no further danger. The fire is believed to have been caused by an unattended burn barrel.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office and Greater Regional Health’s Medic 2 also responded to the scene to provide support. One individual, who was not a firefighter, was treated at the scene.
Crews cleared the scene at 4:47 p.m. and returned to the station.
