(Glenwood, IA) — Atlantic had a strong presence in District 5 Boys’ wrestling action Saturday and will send a number of district champions as well as runner-ups to the state tournament at the Casey’s Center.
At 106, Dayton Van Horn got past Fisher Graves of Clarinda in the semi-final round. Van Horn fell short of Glenwood’s Ace Cochrane (TF 2:04) for the district championship but secured his spot in the state tournament.
At 120 pounds, Keaton Schroeder won by decision in the semis, and would go on to face Glenwood’s Brody Black in the championship. A key reversal in the final period gave Black the edge, winning over Schroeder 9-5. Both will advance to the state tournament.
In the 132 class, Braxton Hass would cruise his way through the tournament with a tech fall over Cade Harlan of Winterset in the semis and a win by fall in the finals over Avery Kimman of Harlan.
At 138, Landon Hagen made it to the finals with a quick fall in the first period against Harlan’s Nathan Sandquist, qualifying for the state tournament. In the finals, Hagen lost to Lane Travis of Creston to tech fall in the second period.
at 150 pounds, Jayden Harter dominated the bracket with three falls, cementing his spot in the state tournament with a win over Dayton Gusman of Red Oak in the third period
in the 175 class, Draven Smith lost in the semi-finals via tech fall to Nile Lundvall of Glenwood. Smith would then qualify for the state tournament by dominating his way through the consulation bracket, eventually making it to the 2nd place match, where he won via tech fall over Harlan’s Jaden Stephens.
At 190, Donovan Hedrington won by fall over Jared Scriver of Red Oak in the semis, and would go on to win by decision in the championship against Glenwood’s Jacob Aust. Hedrington now qualifies for the state tournament for the second time in his high school career.
in the 215 class, Travin Thomas also had an impressive showing in the second place match after falling in the championship to Glenwood’s Mason Koehler. Thomas punches his ticket to the state tournament with a tech fall victory over Nick Gubbels of Harlan.
