(Bedford) An Adair County resident skipped the Super Bowl and hauled in a trophy fish last Sunday at Lake of Three Fires in Taylor County.
Micaiah Thompson of Greenfield caught a new state-record crappie weighing 3.95 pounds, breaking the old record of 3.88 pounds, which had stood since 2013. “That fish was caught out of the Three Mile Reservoir down by Creston,” said John Lorenzen, Fisheries Biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “A new record fish must be one ounce heavier than the previous record holder.”
Lorenzen tells KSOM/KS95 News the 17.8-inch crappie was caught on a green jig head with a live minnow. “The fish was giant,” said Lorenzen. “I mean, you could put your fist in its mouth, something you would think about with a Large Mouth Bass.”
Lorenzen says another thing about this story: an hour earlier, Thompson’s fishing buddy landed a 17.25-inch Crappie. So, what are the odds of that happening?
Thompson’s decision to skip the Super Bowl for fishing obviously paid off.
