(Atlantic) The Atlantic School Board approved the Superintendent’s recommendation to terminate High School Counselor Jesse McCann at Wednesday’s board meeting. No further comments were made on his termination.
Last week, the Atlantic Police Department stated they have been made aware of an incident involving a school staff member and students. The Atlantic Police Department has been investigating the information provided. The release stated, “They take the safety of the children and community that we serve very seriously and will continue to handle this investigation thoroughly.” No other details were released and no charges have been filed at this time.
At Wednesday’s meeting, the board heard from freshman student Liam Spencer who was a major advocate in the recent protest. Liam questioned the board, “In light of recent events, will the employment process be stricter in order to ensure the safety of students and staff?”
The school board policy states that there will be no comments in return from board members.
There were over 40 other individuals in attendance at Wednesday’s meeting, which was only around 13 minutes long.
Board President Josh McLaren said they received a petition that has been verified to have a special election to fill the vacant school board seat. Paperwork is now available and due March 6th to the School Business Office. The special election will be held March 31st. McLaren said they will now proceed with four board members as opposed to appointing a member.
The school board approved the resignations/retirements of Melanie McDermott (Food Service) effective January 30th, Brenden Casey (9th Grade Football Coach Fall 2026), and Allison Widrowicz (Special Education Teacher) effective end of school year. They approved the recommendations hire: Heath Kelley (High School Football Assistance Coach Fall 2026), Kenna McGurren (9-12th Grade Visual Arts Teacher Fall 2026), Spring Sports Contracts, and Summer Sports Contracts.

The board also set March 25th as the public hearing dates for the 2026-2027 School Master Calendar and FY27 Budget.
