Both Iowa St. basketball teams lost on Tuesday night. The #5 ranked Iowa St. men lost on the road to TCU 62-59 while the ISU women fell at BYU 83-69.
The Cyclones men led most of the first half but the Horned Frogs kept it close — ISU was up 28-19 but the Frogs jumped back with a 10-0 run to lead 29-28. Joshua Jefferson got a lay-up at the buzzer to take the lead at the half.
Iowa St. was up 41-39 in the 2nd half but TCU went on another 10-0 run to lead 49-41 with 8:56 remaining. Now it was ISU’s turn to make a run — a 10-0 run of their own when Milan Momcilovic hit a triple, Jefferson hit a triple. Iowa St. led 51-49 with 4:59 to go.
They pushed their lead to 55-50 with 2:38 left but Micah Robinson got a dunk and after a Cyclone turnover, Jayden Pierre hooked one in. Momcilovic missed a three Pierre nailed a triple for the Frogs to take a 57-55 lead with 48 seconds left. Lipsey made a bad pass for a turnover and Robinson got another dunk to make it a two possession game. Iowa St. missed their final three shots — all threes — and TCU had their upset.
Lipsey and Jefferson led Iowa St. (21-3, 8-3) with 12 points while Momcilovic added 11. The Cyclones were just 5 of 23 from three point land and turned it over 17 times plus were only 2 of 8 from the free throw line.
TCU (15-9, 5-6) was led by Tanner Todson and Robinson each with 17 points. It was the 2nd win this season against a ranked opponent after beating Florida in December.
Iowa St. will try to rebound this Saturday with a rematch against #9 Kansas at Hilton Coliseum, Cyclones Pre Game at 11 am on KSOM.
The women had a close first half against BYU but the Cougars outscored the Cyclones 26-10 in the third quarter to break it open. BYU went on a 12-2 run to start the 2nd half to lead 55-44. The Cougars led by as many as 20 and took a 69-52 lead to the fourth quarter. ISU could not get the lead under double digits the rest of the game.
Iowa St. (19-6, 7-6) was led by Audi Crooks with 18 points; Jada Williams had 16; and Kenzie Hare added 15.
BYU (17-8, 6-7) was led by Olivia Hamlin with 23 points off the bench and got 21 points from Delaney Gibb including 5-7 from three point land; Lara Rohkohl added 15.
