Study Finds Iowa Has Second-Highest Cancer Rate In U.S.
(Des Moines, IA) — A study conducted by University of Iowa researchers shows cancer in Iowa is rising. Iowa has the second highest cancer rate in the country and is the only state where the rate is rising. The findings were presented Thursday at the state office building. Governor Kim Reynolds reflected that her husband was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2023 but is now in remission. She said she will introduce a bill to raise taxes on cigarettes in response.
Man Dies In Charter Oak Grain Bin Accident
(Charter Oak, IA) — An 83-year-old man is dead after getting trapped in a grain bin. The man was identified as Robert Kroll and he was declared dead at the scene. Authorities in Crawford County were sent to the area around 9:50 a.m. on Thursday. Emergency crews began to cut holes into the side of the grain bin to facilitate removal. More than a dozen agencies responded to the call, including Anderson’s Ethanol to preform grain vacuuming services.
President Trump Endorses Chris McGowan For Iowa’s 4th District
(Des Moines, IA) — President Trump is endorsing Chris McGowan for the Republican Primary in Iowa’s fourth district. Trump called McGowan “a brave Iowa Air National Guard Veteran” and “successful attorney.” He added that Chris has a proven Record of Success and that he is “a winner.” McGowan is one of four Republicans vying for the nomination in the district currently held by Rep. Randy Feenstra, who is running for governor. Iowa Tea Party Founder Ryan Rhodes, Consultant Christian Schlaefer and former State House Majority Leader Matt Windschitl are also running for the position.
Iowa Mobile Home Owners Urge Lawmakers For More Protection
(Des Moines, IA) — Members of the Iowa Manufactured Home Residents Network are pleading for protections from rent gouging. They gathered at the Iowa State Capitol on Thursday, saying out-of-state owners and corporations are failing to protect homeowners and creating unsafe park conditions. Democratic lawmakers in both the House and Senate are working to generate a bipartisan solution. One proposal would provide a limit of only one rent increase per calendar year.
Soybean-Based Foam Could Replace Forever Chemical Foam
(Des Moines, IA) — Firefighters could be forced to replace firefighting foam chemicals with a soybean-based product. A bill in the state Senate is being considered that would force the change, reducing exposure to forever chemicals. Traditional firefighting foam contains PFAS, which has been linked to increasing the risk of cancer. The soybean-based foam is produced in Cedar Rapids and can extinguish fires involving paper, wood, straw, vegetation, gas and oil.
