(Griswold, IA) — It was a doubleheader split between Griswold and Sidney on Tuesday night — the Cowgirls won 55-31 while the Tigers won the boys game 48-31.
In the girls game, both defenses took control — Griswold in a full court press and Sidney in a 2-3 zone and later a 1-3-1 zone. The Tigers were 1 of their first 9 from the field and 9-49 for the game for just 18 percent including 2-25 on their threes. Alyssa Melvin hit a couple of threes in the first half and then the Cowgirls broke down the Tigers defense in the third quarter, outscoring Griswold 21-5 to take control of the game.
Alyssa Downing led Sidney (8-11, 7-5) with 14 points, Alyssa Melvin had 12 and Charli King had 12 while Addyson Foster added 7.
Griswold (10-9, 4-7) ended their 5 game win streak and was led by Amanda Houser with 9 points.
In the boys game, Sidney had not played a game since January 20 because of a depleted roster. The Cowboys used the same 5 players the entire game and Griswold wore them down in the 2nd half. The Tigers led 20-19 at the half but outscored Sidney 20-1 in the third quarter.
Dain Laverty had six threes all season but hit four of the them on the night, three in the first half. Laverty and Brayden Lockwood both led Griswold (2-16, 1-10) with 14 points, Wyatt Silk had 10 points and Colton Frieze added 6.
Joseph Lutz led Sidney (3-12, 3-8) with 19 points.
