(Council Bluffs, IA) — The Honduran convicted of killing Iowan Sarah Root will serve 20 years in prison.
Eswin Mejia was sentenced on Monday to 20-to-22 years in prison for motor vehicle homicide, DUI and failing to appear in court. He will be eligible for parole in 10 years.
Root was 21 years old at the time of the crash in 2016 and had just graduated from Bellevue University. Investigators say that Mejia, an illegal immigrant, was drunk and driving at a high rate of speed when he rear ended Root at a traffic light, causing her vehicle to launch more than 300 feet.
