NW 100th Street Near Horizon Events Center Closing For Trump Visit
(Clive, IA) — Traffic will be affected around the Horizon Events Center today due to President Trump’s visit this afternoon. The City of Clive says NW 100th Street will be temporarily closed to vehicle traffic between Hickman Avenue and Swanson Boulevard between noon and 5 p.m. Access to the Clive Greenbelt Trail and Maddox Parkway will also be closed. City officials say peaceful protests will be allowed on public property along the northbound lanes of 100th Street, but not on Horizon Events Center property. The White House says Trump’s speech in the will focus on affordability an energy. It’s the latest stop in Trump’s tour to tout his economic accomplishments heading into the 2026 midterms. Trump visited Michigan earlier this month in the last stop of his affordability tour.
Iowa Senators Advance Ban On Weather-Altering Sciences
(Des Moines, IA) — A bill in the Iowa Senate would make weather-altering sciences a crime. The bill passed unanimously out of subcommittee and must clear committee before appearing on the Senate floor. Geoengineering activities like cloud seeding have drawn concern from constituents. The measure would make it a Class D felony for practicing the science with a punishment up to five years in prison. Opponents of the bill said cloud seeding has been studied for over 70 years and doesn’t create new weather patterns, it just enhances current conditions.
Iowa Democratic Lawmakers Launch Black And Brown Caucus
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa Black Democratic state lawmakers are expanding their caucus to twelve members. The Iowa Legislative Black and Brown Caucus will be focusing on legislation to protect civil rights and fair treatment in the justice system. The group made the announcement on Monday. The original legislative Black Caucus was formed in 2015. They stated on Monday that the vision of the group has expanded due to more people “being seriously discriminated against.”
Two Iowa Prison Staff Members Assaulted By Inmates
(Fort Madison, IA) — Two Iowa State Penitentiary staff members are recovering after an assault by inmates. The assault happened Wednesday last week around 9:30 a.m. The Department of Corrections did not say how many inmates were involved or if charges were filed. In an email, the DOC says the inmates involved will be held accountable for their actions.
Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig Announces Campaign For Third Term
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig is running for a third term in the position. Naig was elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022. He says his focus has always been on delivering results for Iowa. He added that the focus of his third term would be on cutting the red tape. He will be facing challenges from two Democrats in Chris Jones and Wade Dooley.
Muscatine Democrat Drops Bid For Congress To Run For Auditor
(Muscatine, IA) — Democrat Taylor Wettach is dropping his run for Congress to focus on a run for state Auditor. Wettach is a trade and national security attorney from Muscatine. He’s turning his attention to the only seat in the state currently held by a Democrat. The state Auditor position will be vacated by Rob Sand, who is running for governor. Wettach has received endorsements from former Governor and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and former Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller.
