(Creston) The Creston Fire Department responded to two fire incidents on Sunday, January 25.
According to the Department’s Facebook Page, the first call came at 2:34 a.m., when the Osceola Fire Department requested mutual aid for a structure fire at 116½ E. Webster Street in Osceola. Creston’s Ladder 1, staffed by four firefighters, arrived on scene at 3:22 a.m. and assisted with suppression efforts. The fire caused extensive damage to The Broken Spoke Bar and Alley Bowl. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Creston firefighters cleared the scene at 5:31 a.m. and returned to the station by 6:06 a.m.
A second fire was reported at 9:34 a.m. in the 200 block of North Maple Street after residents noticed the odor of smoke in a second-floor apartment. Firefighters arrived within two minutes and discovered a fire in the ceiling, which was upgraded to a working fire, prompting additional units to respond. Crews pulled down the ceiling and found flames in the 2×6 flat-roof trusses. The fire was quickly extinguished with a water can by 9:47 a.m. Firefighters also removed smoldering insulation from two rooms.
Additional personnel assisted with overhaul operations, which included removing debris and fully extinguishing remaining hot spots. The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. Creston firefighters cleared the scene and returned to the station by 12:28 p.m.
