(Corning, IA) — Atlantic leads the John J. Harris Tournament after day one at Southwest Valley High School on Friday evening.

The Trojans have 94 points with Riverside in 2nd place with 86.5.  AC/GC is third with 62, Shenandoah 4th with 69.5 and Nodaway Valley rounds out the top five with 52.  Atlantic has 8 wrestlers still alive on the front end in the semifinals:  Dayton Van Horn at 106, Keaton Schroeder at 120, Collin Harris at 126, Braxton Haas at 132, Kalvin Hayes at 150, Jayden Harter at 157, Donovan Hedrington at 190 and Travin Thomas as 215.

Harris had a dominating day for Atlantic going 2-0 with falls in 44 seconds and 41 seconds.  Haas had two falls at 1:24 and 1:36.  Hayes had two falls at 1:27 and 1:26.  Donovan Hedrington had two falls at 1:02 and 1:01.

At 165 pounds, Dreven Smith beat Max Shanno 7-4 in the first round, earning near fall points in the 3rd period to earn the win but lost to the #1 seed and #2 ranked Jacob McGargill of Shenandoah by fall at 1:22.

Riverside has seven wrestlers in the front end:  Kingston Carrigan at 126, Rex Shanno at 132, Drew Anderson at 138, Jack Branan at 144, Mason Houser at 150, Jaxon Gordon at 157, and Wyatt Bell at 215.  Despite a record of 13-17, Bell had two falls including upsetting #3 seed Landon Fuller of Shenandoah at 2:58.

AC/GC has 5 in the semifinals:  Chase Slaybaugh at 120, Charlie Christensen at 144, Ryder Cline at 150, Carter Richter at 215 and Jack Sheeder at 285.

Nodaway Valley has four in the front end:  Josh Nelson at 106, Jett Christensen at 132, Caleb Christensen at 190, and Ashton Honnold at 285.

Gavin Wetzel of Southwest Valley is in the semifinals with two pins at 3:24 and 5:40.

Some highlight matches — at 165, #8 ranked Fischer Buckingham of Wayne beat #9 ranked Blake Schwartz of Panorama 6-5 with a takedown with 2 seconds left in the match.  165 pounds has six ranked wrestlers in the field.  At 175, Laramie Stoakes of Lenox trailed Bentyn Hoover of CAM 12-6 and moments after giving up near fall points, reversed Hoover and pinned him at 5:36.  Brian Snyder of Centerville is the #1 seed at 190 and had two quick matches — pins in 19 and 22 seconds.
