(Guthrie Center, IA) — AC/GC will square off against Earlham in a West Central basketball DH tonight, coverage on KSOM.
The girls game will feature two of the top four teams in the conference — AC/GC is 9-2, 6-1 and in 2nd place in the standings. The Chargers were once ranked in Class 2A but fell out of the 14th spot of losing to Exira EHK on Saturday. They rebounded to beat Woodward Granger on Tuesday 57-44 — Senior Camdyn Richter leads with 16.3 ppg and Junior Stella Largent is at 9.7 ppg. Head Coach Brad Baudler says he still wants to work on the team’s defense and he’s trying to mix up the man-to-man with zone
Earlham is tied for 4th at 8-3, 5-3 and is led by Senior Averie Fagan who is averaging 17.4 ppg and is 37 percent on her threes. Baudler says stopping the Cardinals means stopping Fagan
On the boys side, it has been a frustrating year for AC/GC with a 3-7 record, 2-5 in the WCAC. Head Coach Lance Kading says his defense has improved but the Chargers have had problems scoring, averaging just 45.3 points a game as a team. They did beat Exira EHK on Saturday 51-45 but fell to Woodward Granger on Tuesday 61-37. They only scored 20 against Madrid and 22 against Des Moines Christian. Junior Jonny Kading is back from an injury has started the last three games, averaging 7.7 points. Lance Kading says he will only help this team
Earlham is 8-4, 5-3 and tied for 4th — Senior Griffin Messner leads with 15.9 ppg, Junior Brady Reynolds is at 12.0 ppg. Kading says the Cardinals shoot a lot of threes
