(Pottawattamie Co.) The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed January 2026 as Radon Action Month, highlighting the health risks associated with radon exposure and encouraging residents to take preventive action.
Candy Steenbock, Public Health Epidemiologist, said unfortunately Iowa has some of the highest levels of radon in the country.
Steenbock said the state of Iowa maintains a list of licensed radon mitigators if one is needed.
The proclamation signed by the Supervisors emphasizes that testing is simple and affordable, and that effective mitigation systems can significantly reduce radon levels and improve indoor air quality. County leaders encourage residents to test their homes, reduce elevated radon levels when necessary, and support local public health efforts aimed at preventing lung cancer through education and awareness.
