(Des Moines) The 2026 Iowa legislature gaveled in on Monday morning. Property taxes and eminent domain are two of the priorities facing Iowa Lawmakers this session. During his opening remarks, Speaker of the House Pat Grassley (R-New Hartford) delivered opening remarks to the Iowa House of Representatives. He says Chief among those goals is property taxes. Iowans have made it known. The current property tax system is not working for them.
District #18 Republican Representative Tom Moore of Griswold stated that lawmakers need to address property taxes. Moore says this is a tricky subject, and is not sure what direction this will take.
Representative Moore says property taxes generate $8 billion annually.
Senator Grassley stated that seniors on fixed income are being priced out of their homes. He says the high costs are causing young people to delay homeownership. And every day, Iowa families are seeing their bills rise with no predictability and no way to know whether these tax dollars are being used efficiently. Grassley said that for too long, certainty for taxing entities has taken priority over certainty for taxpayers. He says it is time to put the taxpayers first.
