(Huntsville, AL) — Playing mahjong, a Chinese tile game, boosts brain health by combining fun, focus and social activity.
Experts say it specifically strengthens thinking skills because players have to use memory, recognize patterns and make quick-decisions about what tiles to play and when. A review of more than 50 studies, published in 2024 in The Journal Of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease, found that mahjong players had better eye-hand coordination than non-players and exhibited stable or even improved cognitive function.
Laura Patil, a licensed therapist in Alabama says she recommends mahjong because it engages all five senses and creates a fully immersive experience.
