(Oakland, IA) — It has been a strong start to the season for the Riverside girls basketball team — after a season opening loss to St. Albert, the Bulldogs have rattled off seven straight wins and are ranked #13 in Class 2A. Riverside uses a full court pressing defense that has created a lot of turnovers from opponents but when they do get across the half court line, Head Coach Mark Jeppesen wants to see the same style of aggressiveness and it has been a focus over the winter break
Junior Sydney Somers leads Riverside in scoring averaging 15.5 points per game. She has a field goal percentage of 54.9 and has gotten to the free throw line 33 times and shooting 73 percent there. Jeppesen says defenses are collapsing in on her so the Bulldogs may need to work on other options
Juniors Sophia Fenner and Kayden Schnack are both averaging 7.6 points a game. Fenner has been fearless on the boards leading the team along with Somers at 8 per game. Schnack is shooting 35 percent from three point land and Jeppesen would like to explore her scoring a little more
Riverside at 7-1 will host Sidney at 2-4 on Saturday, it will be a girls boys doubleheader, coverage of both games on KSOM. Girls start at 2 pm.
