(Anita, IA) — It was a rough start to the season for the CAM girls basketball team as they took two non-conference losses against AHSTW and Earlham, but they stepped up in a huge way cruising past conference opponents Woodbine, Paton-Churdan, and Ar-We-Va followed by a tough loss to #8 ranked Exira-EHK. In that contest, the Cougars kept it close for majority of the game trailing 24-20 at the half, but 21 points from Spartan Taryn Peterson kept Exira-EHK out of reach. The true test awaits the Cougars in January as they start the month with two conference match-ups against Boyer Valley and Glidden-Ralston. Head Coach Joe Wollum says the team saw a lot of growth in the first six games:
One of CAM’s biggest strengths is how young their team is. The Cougars are led in scoring by three juniors; Ada Hansen who’s averaging just under 18 points a night, Ruthie Rich with 8.8 points per game, and Courtney Follmann with 8.3 points per game. Coach Wollum will only start one senior on most nights in the form of Krista James who leads in rebounding with 6.5 boards per game. Wollum also likes the talent he brings off the bench:
One aspect that Wollum thinks the team has improved upon is in communication. Despite already playing with each other, Wollum was surprised to see how much better the team jelled in their first six games of the season:
Wollum and his squad will take the court again on January 3rd traveling to Boyer Valley.
