(Lewis) John Lorenzen, a fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, is warning anglers to check the ice conditions before heading out on local lakes and ponds. With above-average temperatures expected this week, Lorenzen advises that ice may no longer be as safe as it was earlier this month.
“Early in the month, colder temperatures formed solid ice, typically five to seven inches thick on many lakes and ponds,” Lorenzen explained. “But with the warmer weather coming, it’s crucial to check the ice conditions before you go out.”
The forecast predicts temperatures in the low to mid-50s through Thursday, dipping into the upper 40s on Friday, mid-40s on Saturday, and upper 30s by Sunday. Overnight lows are expected to stay around the low 30s.
For comparison, the average high temperature this time of year is around 30°F, with lows typically in the low teens. With such a dramatic shift in temperatures, it’s essential to exercise caution and avoid venturing onto the ice without verifying its safety.
Stay safe out there, and always check ice conditions before heading out for your fishing trip.
