(Atlantic) Lewis Central pulled away for a 60–34 win over Atlantic in a Hawkeye Ten Conference boys’ basketball game Friday night in Atlantic.
Charles Schaben led the Titans with 17 points, while Carter Thielen added 15. Gavin McLaren paced Atlantic with 11 points, and Hunter Nelson with nine.
Lewis Central held a 9–7 lead after the first quarter but trailed 16–15 midway through the second. The Titans responded with a 9–0 run to close the half and take a 25–16 advantage. Schaben scored seven points during the run, and Thielen knocked down a three-pointer. Atlantic guard Gage Gross came off the bench to keep the game close early in the second quarter, hitting two three-point shots.
The Titans created separation in the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans 18–6 to build a 43–22 lead. McLaren and Nelson each connected on three-pointers in the fourth quarter for Atlantic, but the Trojans were unable to close the gap created in the third. Lewis Central received scoring contributions from 10 players. In addition to Schaben and Thielen’s combined 32 points, Connor Hathaway scored seven, Cooper Williams and Carter Lobaugh added four each, Brock Egner, Jimmy Scott, and Evan Lillie scored three apiece, and Peyton Phippen and Camden Dahlheim each chipped in one point.
Atlantic also saw balanced scoring, with McLaren and Nelson combining for 20 points. Gross finished with six, Hudson McLaren added five, Sawyer Tarrell scored two, and Corbin Ritter had one.
Atlantic (2–4) hosts Winterset on Monday night. Lewis Central (4–1) plays Bellevue East on Saturday at the Mid-America Center.
