(Canyon, TX) — Iowa Western scored 28 unanswered points to defeat Hutchinson College 28-10 in the National Junior College football championship on Wednesday night.
The Blue Dragons built a 10-0 lead in the first quarter but Malachi Marshall threw two TD passes in the 2nd period to lead 14-10 at the half. Marshall hit Cyrus Courtney for a 23 yard TD pass late in the third quarter and Daniel Swinney added a 6 yard TD run late to put the game away.
The Reivers held Hutchinson (11-1) to just 10 first downs in the game and sacked Dragons QB Christian Johnson 10 times. Jeremy Lewis for Western and a Iowa St. recruit had 2.5 sacks, 3 tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and a QB hurry.
Gus Bashore, an Underwood alum, was 4-4 on his extra points for the Reivers who avenged a regular season loss to Hutchinson. Iowa Western (12-1) wins their 4th career national championship — the Reivers have played in 5 consecutive national championship games and are 55-7 over those 5 seasons.
