(Atlantic) Kuemper erased a four-point first-quarter deficit and pulled away for a 59-46 win over Atlantic in a girls basketball game Tuesday night in Atlantic.
Katrina Williams layup at the buzzer gave the Trojans a 17-13 lead after one, but Kuemper shifted the momentum with a 9-0 run to take a 26-23 advantage at halftime. The Knights broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Atlantic 18-3 to build a 45-26 lead heading into the fourth. Elsa Tiefenthaler provided a spark for Kuemper, knocking down all four of her free throws and adding a basket.
Atlantic increased the tempo in the final quarter and trimmed the deficit to 12 points, but time worked against the Trojans, forcing them to foul late. Kuemper went 6-of-12 at the free-throw line down the stretch to secure the victory.
Tiefenthaler led the Knights with 18 points. Charlotte Hackfort scored 11, while Kaylie Simons and Addy Anthofer each added 10. Mackenzie Yetmar finished with nine points, and Alivia Schenkelberg added a free throw.
Makenna Schroeder led Atlantic with 15 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. Katrina Williams scored 12, Peyton McLaren had five, Zoey Kirchhoff, Madison McLaren and Brynn Lamp each added four, and Jillian Saathoff chipped in two.
Atlantic falls to 4-3 and hosts Lewis Central on Friday. Kuemper improves to 5-2 and travels to Spencer on Thursday.
