(Neola, IA) — Sophia Hazen has battled injuries — mental and physical — in her years of wrestling for Tri Center and ATU and is off to a 14-0 start this season.
As a freshman, Hazen went 23-11 and went to the state tournament but did not get a win. Early in her sophomore year, she was in a match and dislocated her elbow — at one point she wondered if she would ever wrestle again but she came back for districts but she says it was way too soon
Hazen is her own worst critic and not just in wrestling
Hazen worked hard this past summer, she tried freestyle for the first time so she could develop some new moves. She worked at Powerhouse wrestling and did well in Pre-season nationals. It has made her a better wrestler
Hazen thinks about her experience at state as a freshman often and was not ready for it and expects it will be different this year
ATU will compete in the 18 team Riverside tournament tonight.
