(Denison) Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District #4 Public Information Officer, Shelby McCreedy, reports that there have been 67 fewer fatalities on Iowa’s roadways compared to the same time last year. While McCreedy acknowledges that each year presents unique challenges and variables, there is optimism that Iowa could see fewer than 300 fatalities by the end of the year—potentially marking the lowest fatality rate in the state since 1925.
For example, motorcycle fatalities are down 39 percent from the five-year average. McCreedy says even better news: ATV and UTV fatality accidents are down 50 percent from 2024.
Trooper McCreedy says with three weeks left in the year, the average number of fatalities in December ranges from 22 to 37, and there is one so far this month. McCreedy says they are cautiously optimistic that, for the first time in 100 years, Iowa will record fewer than 300 fatalities for the year.
