(Washington, DC) — Congress is trying to tackle the growing problem of online predators. Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a bi-partisan hearing on protecting kids from online sexual predators, hearing emotional testimony from parents, like Tamia Woods, whose kids committed suicide after being “sextorted.”
Sextortion is when scammers get teens to send them nude photos, then extort the kids for money by threatening to show the pics to family and friends. There were over 33-thousand reports of sextortion in 2024.
After the hearing, Democrat Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois and Republican Chuck Grassley of Iowa said they are introducing three bills to protect kids from online predators.
Dick Durbin says both parties haven’t done enough to combat online predators.
