(Red Oak) Firefighters responded to a fire in the basement of a home in rural Montgomery County on Sunday afternoon.
Villisca Fire Chief John Bruce says the call went out at 12:47 p.m. for a reported fire in the basement at 2374 Union Avenue. When firemen arrived they assisted the occupant from the home.
Firefighters encountered a working fire in the basement of the home and quickly extinguished the fire without incident. Chief Bruce says the cause of the fire appears to be mechanical malfunction with the water heater igniting other nearby combustible materials.
Family and friends are currently assisting the homeowner with temporary residency. No injuries are reported, and there is limited damage to the structure.
