(Lewis) The Shotgun deer season is underway this weekend, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters of a deer donation program named “The Iowa Deer Exchange.”
The Iowa Deer Exchange is a program that connects people who would like a deer for meat with hunters who may have deer they would like to donate.
John Lorenzen of the DNR office in Lewis says hunters can sign up as deer donors, or people can sign up as deer recipients. The database creates a map and a table of information that allows the two parties to connect.
Additionally, the Iowa DNR partners with the Food Bank of Iowa and meat lockers throughout the state for the HUSH (Help Us Stop Hunger) program. This program allows hunters to drop off their deer at participating lockers, and the deer will be processed and given to people in need.
