(Cleveland, Ohio) A health expert is reminding folks to check in with older relatives to learn about family health history.
Doctor Neha Vyas, a family medicine physician at the Cleveland Clinic, says the sooner you can find out about any genetic risks, the better, especially for screening purposes. “It is important to note if diabetes runs in your family, or heart disease, mental health, or cancer runs in your family. It does put you at higher risk of developing these conditions,” said Vyas.
Vyas says knowing family health history may also help with the use of certain medications. Vyas recommends telling your physician about your family’s health history so the doctor can decide whether further testing may be needed.
