(Des Moines) A large area of high pressure will come barreling down into the Midwest on Wednesday, sending temperatures plummeting to well below zero.
“It is going to transport a big cold air mass,” said Jim Lee with the National Weather Service in Des Moines. “The good news is winds will be light at least on Thursday morning when we get the coldest temperatures. But light winds only help a little bit when you have temperatures ranging from 10 to 15 degrees below zero. It’s going to be cold no matter how you slice it.”
Meanwhile, the southern tier of counties across southwest Iowa, and central and eastern Iowa are under a Winter Weather Advisory until 6:00 p.m. this evening.
“We do have some snow coming through today, with most of it in the form of flurries with a light dusting,” said Lee. “However, in the south and southeast, we are looking at a couple of inches, which affects travel in that portion of the state.”
The temperature is forecast to top out at 21 degrees today, with a low of 6 degrees above, Tuesday, 29, low of 20. Wednesday’s high is 20 degrees with a low of 15 degrees below zero. Thursday’s high is 12, with a low of 5. Friday, 29, with a low of 16, and Saturday’s high is 31 with a low of 7—Sunday’s high is 18.
