(Des Moines) A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 3 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Sunday, with forecasters calling for heavy snowfall and dangerous travel conditions across western and central Iowa.
The Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all of Iowa with the exception of Mills, Montgomery, Adams, Fremont, Page, Taylor, and Ringgold counties, which are in a Winter Weather Advisory.
The National Weather Service expects 7 to 12 inches of snow, with the heaviest bands moving in late Friday and continuing through Saturday. Officials warn that travel may become very difficult to impossible, especially for those returning home from Thanksgiving gatherings.
Hazardous conditions—including blowing snow and sudden drops in visibility—could lead to slick roads and slow travel throughout the region.
Those who must be on the roads are advised to drive with extreme caution, allow extra travel time, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration. Motorists should also ensure their vehicles are fully winterized and in good working condition.
The storm is expected to taper off early Sunday.
