(Atlantic) A new grassroots volunteer initiative called The Gathering is bringing hope, hot meals, and community connection to Atlantic residents. The program offers free home-cooked suppers every other Monday from 5:00–7:00 p.m. at the American Legion Memorial Hall (Armory), 201 Poplar Street.
Founded and coordinated by Sally Richter, The Gathering is designed to support individuals and families facing financial strain, rising expenses, or simply needing a night off and a sense of belonging. No registration, proof of need, or qualifications are required.
“Our mission is simple—neighbors helping neighbors,” said Richter. “Anyone who needs a warm meal, kindness, and company is welcome at our table.”
Volunteers prepare homemade soups, sandwiches, desserts, and drinks, while local youth groups assemble “Meals in a Bag” for guests to take home. Many attendees also leave with donated winter clothing, personal-care items, or shelf-stable foods. Local businesses, churches, and individuals have shown strong support. Monetary donations can be made at any Rolling Hills Bank & Trust location to “The Gathering” account or dropped off with committee members.
The Gathering also offers carry-out and home delivery, ensuring accessibility for homebound neighbors, seniors, and families without transportation.
