(Baltimore, MD) — Researchers suggest two cigarettes per day could be enough to increase the risk of heart disease by 50 percent.
According to a study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, researchers found that men and women who smoked as few as two cigarettes daily also had a 60 percent increased risk of death from any cause compared to those who never smoked.
While data from the American Lung Association shows that adult smoking in the U.S. has dropped to roughly 12-percent in 2022, the new study found that cutting back on usage may not be enough to reverse the harm.
Researchers suggest Americans should be counseled to quit smoking altogether rather than just cutting back.
