(Des Moines) The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services announced that November SNAP benefits are now being issued following the end of the 43-day federal government shutdown. More than 130,000 Iowa households are expected to begin receiving their November funds as early as this evening, with all payments anticipated to be distributed in the coming days.
The shutdown had delayed November benefits, but the passage of a federal funding bill allowed the USDA to authorize states to resume distribution. “Our team is committed to processing payments as quickly as possible,” said HHS Director Larry Johnson, who also thanked volunteers who supported food banks during the disruption.
Governor Kim Reynolds praised the generosity of donors who helped food banks meet increased demand. Iowa’s six regional food banks also met the state’s $1 million donation match challenge, with private contributions from individuals, businesses, and organizations—along with matched state funds—supporting expanded food distribution across all 99 counties.
Matched funds were allocated based on the number of SNAP participants each food bank serves, helping boost food purchases and local pantry operations. SNAP recipients are encouraged to check their EBT balances and visit hhs.iowa.gov/snap for updates.
