(Murray) A tragic hit-and-run accident south of Murray claimed the life of a 16-year-old on Wednesday evening.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the victim, identified as Elmer Borntrager of Murray, was operating a horse-drawn buggy when he was struck by an unknown vehicle around 5:50 p.m. The collision occurred on Clarke County Road R-15, just south of Forest Street.
Investigators say the northbound vehicle struck the buggy, causing it to leave the road and plunge into a ditch. Borntrager was ejected from the buggy and died at the scene from his injuries. The driver of the striking vehicle fled the area and has not yet been identified.
The incident remains under investigation. Multiple local and state agencies responded and assisted at the scene.
