(Undated) — Today is Veterans Day and along with that comes an increased focus on the sensitive topic of suicide.
The most recent data available from the Department of Veterans Affairs noted an average of 17.6 suicides per day among veterans, a rate that’s far higher than the general non-veteran population.
In an effort to bring down that rate, the Department launched the Mission Daybreak grand challenge in 2022 to award 20-million-dollars to groups working on solutions to the veteran suicide crisis. One such group, the national non-profit Stop Soldier Suicide, was awarded funding for its Black Box project, which uses AI to analyze data from the devices of veterans who have taken their own lives in an attempt to better identify those who may be at risk of self-harm.
If you are a veteran in crisis or know someone who is, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be reached 24/7 by calling 988.
