(Atlantic) A ribbon cutting was held this morning for the new solar system display at the Schildberg Recreation Area in Atlantic in memory of the late John Garrett.
On hand were several family members and friends of John and Carol Garrett, as well as members of the Atlantic Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors.
John’s wife Carol said this project was a dream near and dear to John’s heart.
Carol said in June 2023, John held an astronomy presentation at the “Y” and invited attendees to go to the Schildberg Recreation Area to view a model of the solar system. He used a surveyors wheel to measure the distances from the sun based on the Thousand-Yard Model.
The model begins on the west side of the Schildberg Recreation Area with the sun and continues east along the trail.
