(Iowa City, IA) — Atticus Sappington kicked a 39 yard field goal with 3 seconds left to give #9 Oregon a 18-16 win over the University of Iowa.
The Hawkeyes offense had been in slow motion most of the game but in the 4th quarter with 6:52 to play and a 3rd down and 5 from their own 12 yard line, Mark Gronowski found DJ Vonnahme for a 40 yard pass play. It gave Iowa a first down at the Oregon 48. Three plays on 4th & 3, Gronowski found Reese Vander Zee wide open for a gain 15 yards and a first down. Kamari Moulton broke a 16 yard run and on 4th and Goal from the 3, Gronowski found the end zone to give Iowa a 16-15 lead.
Iowa went for two and Gronowski’s pass was tipped and slipped to the back of the end zone where Moulton caught it and was ruled in bounds for the conversion. However, on replay, it was ruled that Moulton did not get a foot in bounds and the lead stayed at one.
Oregon had plenty of time with 1:51 on the clock and Dante Moore moved the Ducks down the field starting at their own 25 yard line. On 1st and 10 from their own 49 yard line, Moore threaded the needle with perfect 24 yard pass play to Malik Benson to get the Ducks into field goal range with 23 seconds left. After a flurry of timeouts, Sappington’s kick was well within the left upright to give Oregon the win.
It was a breakout game for the Kuemper Catholic alum Vonnahme who scored his first college touchdown on a 3 yard pass in the first half plus had the big 40 yard catch to set up the Hawkeyes 2nd TD on the night.
Oregon is now 8-1, 5-1 while Iowa falls to 6-3, 4-2. The Hawkeyes visit USC next Saturday, kickoff 2:30 pm.
