(Winterset) Winterset is preparing for a Class 3A quarterfinal matchup with Solon on Friday night. The Huskies advanced with a 28-6 win over Independence in the first round last week.
The Huskies rushed for 236 yards and passed for another 94. Winterset Head Coach Zach Sweeney says they came out on the first series featuring the rushing attack, and were aided by a big pass play from quarterback Wyatt Swanson and Carson Cook.
Winterset started the season with a loss to ADM, edged Creston, fell short to Van Meter, beat Carlisle, lost to Nevada, then got on a roll, winning five straight games to close out the season.
Winterset brings a strong rushing attack to the game on Friday, totaling 2,287 yards, averaging an impressive 6.7 yards per carry. Coach Sweeney discusses the offensive line, which has played exceptionally well this season. He says returning starter Nick Swalve is at Right Guard, Leo Kirkland, the staple on the left side, and Drake McDonald at Tight End all have experience. Caleb Decker has transitioned to left guard, Max Landers at center, and Luca Wetzel at tackle.
Sweeney describes Solon as fast, athletic, and well-coached. The Spartans are 10-0. Quarterback Eli Kampman has thrown for 2017 yards and 27 touchdowns. He has two primary targets, Kaden Hoeper and Maddox Kelly, who have 36 and 39 catches, respectively, for a combined 1,262 yards.
Coach Sweeney says they have to continue to trust in what they do and how they do it, stay together, play fast, play hard, deliver a quality performance, and have a shot in the fourth quarter.
